This Rabbit just went on an all-expenses paid (that's a joke) tour of the entirety of Black Rock City this afternoon, to get a first-hand grok on how our fair metropolis is ... faring. Generally speaking, the playa conditions in the city itself are pretty good, varying between hard pack and thick areas with a solid-ish crust on top. These will become dusty dunes once trampled. The inner playa is in somewhat good shape (you can get around the tufty bits), while the deep playa is pretty thick. You're going to want to have a bike with fat tires out there, for sure. It's not anywhere near as bad as it was in 2007, for those of you who were here.

Yes, it WILL be dusty in Black Rock City this year.

And while weather reports vary, our best prognosticators say that it will cool off during the beginning of the event week, with highs in the mid to upper 70s, and lows around 50 at night. So, it'll be hot, and it'll be cold. There's also a slight possibility of showers or thunder storms. In other words, it's Burning Man ... it's nearly impossible to be overly preparared for what the weather could throw at you.

This is our second-to-last JRS for this event year (hoo boy, it's been a big one!), and we've got one more coming your way about the art on playa, and then that's it! The art is shaping up to be REALLY COOL this year ... you're going to love it.

For those of you playing at home, look for the 2011 Art Theme to be published on the home page of the Burning Man website on Burn night, September 4th.

We very much look forward to seeing you out here!! We are very excited for an amazing event! Please travel safely, and we'll see you soon!

OOPS. TICKETS *ARE* BEING SOLD AT THE BLACK ROCK CITY GATE!

We let a typo slip through in the last JRS, and we're here to pay penance. Tickets ARE in fact being sold at the Gate this year. Oops.

They'll take cash and credit cards, but NO personal checks. Tickets are $360 and stop selling on Thursday, August 26th at midnight (11:59pm).

OK go ahead, spank us.

SATELLITE PHOTO BEING TAKEN OF BLACK ROCK CITY SEPTEMBER 2 AT 11:41AM

Oh hell yeah. Time to get creative. Jeffrey Johnson writes:

"Hi Everyone,

I have arranged with GeoEye for a satellite image acquisition on September 2 at *precisely* 11:41 am. That is NOT!!! playa time ... as in, not at 12:00, not 12:15, not "oh shit where is my watch"... at *precisely* at 11:41am. So if you want to send out a notice to any artists who want to do a project that is captured from *space* (as in not from the airplanes) they need to do it at *precisely* that time. I will get the imagery roughly 24 hours later and it will be posted soon thereafter."

ANOTHER UPDATE ABOUT THE ACLU HOURS ON PLAYA

Lee from the ACLU writes:

"We just heard from Playa Info that they are OK expanding our hours at Playa Info, and we're going to take them up on it. So, the ACLU "Know Your Rights" booth is adding an extra day and changing/expanding hours. We will be at Playa Info:

Mon-Wed, 3-6pm
Thurs-Sun, 3-8pm

Thanks!"

BMIR INFORMATION RADIO LIVE STREAM

Starting sometime late in the day on Wednesday August 25th, BMIR will begin streaming live from the playa. Bandwidth for this live stream has been donated by http://www.StreamGuys.com (yep, they're Burners too).

To listen to the stream go to http://www.bmir.org and click on the "listen now" link. Go ahead and bookmark the page now so you don't forget! You can also access the stream at http://www.ShoutingFire.com

Tune in while you're at home doing that last minute packing and preparation. We'll tell you how the city is coming together, what the weather is like, keep you entertained with great music and give you any late breaking information you need to know. We'll get you psyched for the week ahead!

If you can't make it out to the playa this year you can listen all week long to the stream, 24/7. Every year we get email from Burners around the globe who tell us that listening to the BMIR stream was the next best thing to being there.

This year you can even communicate with the on air DJ via Twitter. Just follow
https://twitter.com/BMIR_FM

So tune in on the internet! We'll see you soon!

BRING AN FM RADIO TO THE PLAYA!

BMIR, Burning Man Information Radio, reminds you to bring an FM radio with you to the playa.

BMIR, 94.5 FM is The Voice of The Man and will be broadcasting 24/7 from the playa starting sometime on Wednesday, August 25th. BMIR is Burning Man’s official radio station and is your source for news, music, official burn information, interviews, weather Exodus information and general madness. Start trying to tune BMIR in when you reach Gerlach and listen to BMIR while you’re sitting in line at the gate. We’ll be broadcasting live from the Greeters station on opening night and will keep you entertained and informed.

This is going to be a particularly good year to have a radio in your camp so you can listen to BMIR. For the first time ever, BMIR will be live 24/7 during the event and we just got a generous donation of A state of the art broadcasting system from WideOrbit Radio Automation. We have lots of great programming in store for you like Reverend Billy, live broadcasts from the Dustfish stage, interviews with artists like Dr Megavolt, music from the Burners Without Borders stage, the Center Camp Café Speaker Series and much more. Of course if there were to be severe weather or any type of emergency BMIR is where you tune for official information and instructions.

Tune us in while you’re lazing around camp with a cocktail during those hot playa days.

Stop by the station and say hello, BMIR has moved and is now located at 1:00 on the Ring Road in Center Camp, right on the Esplanade between the Rangers and The DMV.

Our Production Office will be open everyday from 12 Noon to 4 PM for you to come by and record an announcement promoting your camps events. Relax in our lounge and chat with our DJ’s and have a cocktail. So, remember to bring a radio and we’ll see you in the desert!

SOUNDS FROM THE URBAN INNERGROUND: 2010 MAN BASE SOUNDSCAPE

This is a pretty cool project we thought you'd like to know about. Searchlite and J Kanizzle write:

"Sounds From the Urban Innerground is a 24-hour sequence of recordings gathered by our team from urban centers around the world. It also features original music by our team members, as well as poetry written and recorded by youth incarcerated in the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center in Chicago.

The piece is structured in blocks of time that are archetypal in many urban environments: Overnight dreamscapes transgress into Early morning sounds that transition into the Morning bustle that moves into Lunchtime shuffle that shift into the Afternoon bustle, into the Afternoon/Evening transition time that moves into the Dinnertime shuffling the peaks in the Nighttime revelry. Clips available for preview

We approached the project with the idea that the Man Base brings civic engagement into sharp relief. Like a visit to any central monument—from the Statue of Liberty to the Great Wall of China—people will be most connected to the event and its theme when they come to the Man. Sounds From the Urban Innerground will reinforce that experience by creating indelible memories of moments inspired by sounds and the feelings they conjure.

Preview the first five minutes of each urban archetypal time block here:

Peace, Love, and DUST,

Searchl1te and J Kanizzle"

BLACK ROCK SOLAR AT BURNING MAN 2010

Here's a list of activities for Black Rock Solar at this year's Burn:

YOUR POCKET PHONE MAY LET YOU COMMUNICATE AT BURNING MAN

Before you ask, NO there is no private, commercial cell tower on or near the playa this year, like there was in 2009. There IS NO cell service on playa. Got that? None. Zip. Zero. So don't freak out. OK, so ... John Gilmore writes:

"Ever lose your friends in a dust storm? Get separated while on an arttour in the middle of the night? Missed finding your homies or your old flame all week, even though you know they're at Burning Man somewhere? This year, text them!

The Papa Legba theme camp is offering free on-playa text messaging services to BM participants, using your own phone. It may even be possible to make short voice calls. Not all phones use the same technology we do (GSM-850), but US AT&T and T-Mobile phones work. Don't forget your car charger. On the playa, respond to the "welcome" text message to get service. Try it out in your camp first -- before you're disconnected, dusty, and lost.

KEEP YOUR MOOP AT HOME!

Good advice from our friend Phoenix (and one from us):

"Keep your MOOP at home! If any of your playa equipment, toys, furniture, etc, have been outside, subject to leaves, dirt, cats, birds, etc, it could be a good idea to leave that stuff behind. I just shook out a playa tarp that had, I thought, been safely in a corner of the garage. Had a bunch of leaves & some mouse crap that is better left in my driveway.

For Exodus: We pack differently for the trip home because we've a lot less stuff and our new lover is coming home with us, with all their stuff. We are also very tired and anxious to hit the road. We need to make double certain our trailers and the interiors of our trucks are as secure for the trip home, as the drive to the playa."

Another good piece of advice is to remove everything you buy from its packaging, and throw it out (or recycle it) before you pack it. Pack less in, pack less out.

"ILLUMINATIONS" BY DAVID NORMAL TO RADIATE IN CENTER CAMP CAFE

SF Bay Area - Artist David Normal will exhibit his latest works, "The Illuminations" at the Café in Center Camp during Burningman 2010. The Illuminations are a series of glowing, self-illuminating prints based on Normal's imaginative paintings. Exquisitely printed images are made to glow, like a kind of stained glass window. The handsomely framed glowing Illuminations are a uniquely mesmerizing mode of display that is ideal for Normal's otherworldly visions.

David created the first set of these Illuminations during the Spring of 2010 and recently exhibited them in Italy, Minneapolis and also Des Moines, Iowa. They are currently on display in Salt Lake City. Photos and video from the exhibits can be seen here: http://normal.bz/401/2010/07/the-illuminations/ Funds for this project are being raised in part through David’s blog.

David Normal is a San Francisco painter and animator specializing in the fantastic, surreal and psychedelic."

ESCAPE FROM METROPOLIS CAMP FEATURES INFO ABOUT THE BLACK ROCK DESERT

Our friend Dave Cooper writes:

"Did you know this is the 10th anniversary of the designation of the Black Rock Desert - High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area. What the hell is that you ask? And just what is the National Landscape Conservation System? Come find the answers to this and other questions about the vast Black Rock Desert and Playa and surrounding public lands at "Escape From Metropolis" camp at 5:30 and the Esplanade. Interpretive displays sponsored by the Friends of Black Rock and BLM will answer many questions about the area where BRC resides and that is not all. Friday evening (and into the night) we will feature a live band from Reno on a mobile stage somewhere around Megatropolis to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the NCA and NLCS! Come groove and jive (or jive and dive) to great live music before and after the big burn of Megatropolis."

BILLION BUNNY MARCH IS ON! AND THEY NEED YOUR MOBILE SOUND SYSTEMS!

The illustrious Mein Hare writes:

"The Billion Bunny March Marches Again!...and we need sound cars and mobile sound systems

The Billion Bunny March to Protest Humanity wants art vehicles with massive sound systems who are willing to bunnify themselves and play our ridiculously wonderful marching music.

Want to join the fun? You'll get your very own Billion Bunny March soundtrack to play really loud along the march route and then take home as a thank you gift so you can keep on marching wherever you go! Email Neon Bunny at sfaaron26@yahoo.com if you can help.

Why? Because the humans have gone too far and the world will be much better when it's ruled by BUNNIES!

We'll meet Thursday at BMIR from 5-7pm for bunnification and HOPtails. We march at 7PM SHARP (like a really pointy carrot!)

Join our universal campaign of FLUFFY GOODNESS and JELLYBEANS FOR ALL! and march, hare, MARCH!"

KID-FRIENDLY EXPLORATION OF 5RHYTHMS AND LIFE ENERGIES

Skye writes:

"RhythmWave and the Black Rock Scouts are pleased to offer a kid-friendly exploration of the 5Rhythms and the energies we move through in life. Of course, kids don’t have much trouble moving energy, so we'll also look at ways to stay grounded and connected as we move, both in ourselves and to each other.

Please join RhythmWave (at Baghdad & 4:45ish), Skye, HuggyBear, and the Scouts on Tuesday, August 31 from 4:00 to 5:00pm for some mostly-focused musical playtime, with a pint-sized helping of awareness and a dollop of fun. Kids of all ages welcome. If you're under 12, though, please bring your parent or playa guardian.

For more information about the KidsWave, please contact: info@rhythmwave.org.

BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS COLLECTING KEVLAR & BACKPACKS ON PLAYA

Mr. Breedlove writes:

"Hey Burners!

Grindin, Packin, Plannin, Movin, Shakin, and gettin ready for the Burn ... maybe you're still wondering how you can participate out on playa this year...

****COME DONATE YOUR EXTRA KEVLAR/FIRE TOYS & BACKPACKS (& SOCKS!)***** to BwB this year.....Help us make a difference in peoples lives!

Donate to the MotoMoto Project: Will Ruddick has an amazing project happening in Kenya. Transforming the lives of street kids through the art of spinning fire. MotoMoto needs your extra kevlar and old fire toys. In Will's words: 'Kevlar is the biggest item we need on a regular basis. Any left over fire equipment (heavy on kevlar) is rad.'

Donate to Detroit's Homeless Backpack Project: doxie from Detroit has been working hard on creating a relief project for the homeless in Detroit. Backpacks are stuffed with clothes, blankets, gloves, canned food, socks, hand-warmers, local shelter information and other essentials to brighten the recipients day. Detroit's project is always in need of Backpacks and Socks! The backpacks must be in working condition and it'd be nice if the socks were clean or at least clean by playa standards.

We will be accepting donations at Burners without Borders (3:30+Esplanade) this year during our Activity hours from 12pm-5pm. Make sure you come by and check out what BwB has been up to recently, and how we're getting active even on playa. Stop by, listen to live music, do some screen-printing, and donate to the cause!

Can't wait to be dusty with you,

BURNING MAN ULTRAMARATHON SEEKING SPECTATORS AND VOLUNTEERS

Ka-raaAAazy! And? Love it.

"Spectators Wanted (and Volunteers!) for the Burning Man Ultramarathon (Wed Sept 1)

Okay, so maybe you think a bunch of people running 50 kilometers (31 miles) at Burning Man are a little insane. Yeah, we are. But c'mon, if we can't be insane at Burning Man, where can we be insane?

Be a spectator - cheer on a runner!

What we would love is your support. If you see people running past with a number on their clothes/costume/loincloth (or walking past, as may be the case later in the race), give a cheer. A hug. Offer some cold water, whiskey, or a snack. (In ultramarathons, we eat everything from oranges to bananas to pretzels to chips to yes, even pizza and ice cream.) Shoot a runner with a water gun. Ride your bike next to them, encouraging them, pushing them to run faster.

If you want to volunteer, we could use help with taking down times, pouring water at the aid station, assisting runners, distributing food, etc. We start at 5am, so come on out and ask for Richard who will be coordinating all the volunteers on the day of the race.

September 1, Wednesday - 5 a.m. until all the runners finish (lasting 7, 8, 9 hours?)
We'll start under the man, run around some of the perimeter, down C until 9, then along the Esplanade, and looping around...
More information here:
https://sites.google.com/site/burningmanultramarathon/

If you want to run, please send me (cherylish@yahoo.com) your name, contact info, date of birth, and emergency contact info, and come on down before our 5am start. There's also a 5k starting at 8a.m."

SEEKING A SECOND LINE NEW ORLEANS-STYLE BAND FOR MEMORIAL PROCESSION

"Hello Burners! Do you like welding, bacon, and Dixieland Music? Can you play "Saints" with style? Did you bring an instrument, a washboard perhaps? Maybe just a set of spoons? If so, we could use your help celebrating a long time Burner and gate worker, Randall “Randomizer” Isaac who passed away earlier this year.

We are looking for a “second line” New Orleans-style band. A rowdy-random-raucous rat pack ready to rally the troops across the playa with some ragtime jazz!

The memorial will be held on Friday, Sept 3rd, 6:30pm starting at the Temple. Musicians meet just before - 6:00pm for a quick meet up and run-through on the east (shady) side outside the Temple.

Then everyone will meet at the Temple cave with the 4 foot bunny. Or just look for the pack of dusty gate workers, swing dancers, and DSC members milling about. From there, we will dance our way out to deep playa, stopping briefly at sunset for a short service.

Bring a stuffed bunny and a flame thrower for extra credit."

KADDISH AT THE TEMPLE

Laurie and Berger write:

"Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday

We will be saying Kaddish at the Temple at 4:00 p.m. We will be doing this somewhere in the area of 4:00, using the Temple as a clock face. Please join us. Kaddish is the Jewish prayer for the dead but is open to all. We will have sheets with the prayer written in phonetic Aramaic. Come join us if you want to pray for someone you have lost."

That is, powered for mobility not electricity. If you think your expression would be good in motion or would like to go on the road with your act/show/performance, day or night (how about fire dancing or drumming) contact us at dogbeach@cox.net or talk to us at the "kinetic cab race and review" Thursday 4:20PM, Esplanade and 9:00. Just look for the pedal powered patio."

PLAYA INFO ACOUSTIC STAGE WELCOMES PERFORMERS

The kids from Playa Info write:

"The brand spanking new Playa Info Acoustic Stage will be open every day from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm, Monday through Saturday. The stage will be available Karaoke style--a self-sign-up list will be kept at the stage so that everyone gets a turn. All acoustic acts welcome: musicians, poetry readers, spoken word, jugglers, & magicians. Portable amplification allowed--bring your own.

PARTICIPATE IN THE WHITE PROCESSION

Endi writes:

"This year the subdivision of Camp of the Rising Sun at 6:30 & Esplanade will be leading the White Procession (in collaboration - of course! - with other camps). Camp of the Rising Sun will greet each morning's sunrise with music, movement, ritual, and really effing awesome people 4am-10am, so of course we want to gather everyone Thursday morning to process in our whites (and biege and offwhite and whatever you want to wear, because it's Burning Man and you can do whatever you want, cha!).

Gathering at 4am for the White Procession? Make a night of it!

What: Ramp-Up to the White Procession
Where: Camp of the Rising Sun, 6:30 & Esplanade
When: Wednesday night/Thursday morning: Midnight-4:30am
Who: We've got internationally-acclaimed DJs (the likes of GlobalRuckus and Joro Boro!), regionally-reknowned tribal fusion bellydancers (Endymienne, Jasmine Rain, and more!) but really, WE WANT YOU.
Huh?: WORLD DANCE PARTY. Tribal Style through and through. Global thumping beats to gather new friends and family. Dancers cycling through stage time as solos and organically-inspired duets, trios, and group improv-style tribal bellydance. Invite your neighbors to join in!"

Pretty cool. Don't Panic Camp writes:

"Come be part of enjoyable philosophical discussions in Black Rock City. Each topic is chosen by the group at the start of the meeting.

When: Wednesday & Sunday (12pm Noon)
Where: Don’t Panic Camp (6:00 near Florence)
What: Bring a towel or something comfortable to sit on

BRC POST OFFICE EMAIL PLAYAGRAMS

The Postgoddess writes:

"While we at the BRCPO 2.0h in the 9:00 Plaza are huge fans of stamps and we're all just crazy philatelists, we also love the awesome art and bureaucratic intimacy of delivering Oh-grams. If you're about to bid farewell to friends and family on your way to our dusty Metropolis, tell them to send you an E-Mail Playagram. If you have just bid a friend or loved one good-bye as they begin their pilgrimage to Black Rock City, send them your well wishes in an E-Mail Playagram. All the details are here: http://brcpo2oh.weebly.com/e-mail-playagrams.html"

BURNER OUT OF WATER: SOCIAL EXPERIMENT FOR THOSE NOT AT BURNING MAN

An inventive Burner who's not making to Burning Man this year came up with a clever idea:

"Burner Out of Water: A social experiment for those of us not able to journey to the Metropolis in the desert.

Spend Burn week in your Metropolis, town or village as if you were in Black Rock City. Don your finest (but legal) playa wear. Strike up deep conversations with strangers. Ride your (decorated) bike or walk everywhere. Don't watch any TV. Make your car an art car. Spin poi or do yoga in the park. Bathe with baby wipes. Dance all night. Enjoy a sunrise with your friends. Burn something. Give gifts. Take lots of pictures, write about your off-playa Burn week adventures and send them to burneroutofwater@hotmail.com. Check http://burneroutofwater.weebly.com to see what your fellow Black Rock City lovers did when not residing in Black Rock City. Maybe it'll be so much fun, it'll last longer than a week..."

THANK YOU!

We just want to say thank you to everybody in our community (and outside it, even) who donated to all the projects that were seeking funding this year. So many amazing art installations are coming to the playa as a result, and YOU are responsible for it!

If you'd like to donate, there are still some projects looking:
